Fothergilla Mount Airy in Fall_Hopkinton Stone & Garden

Witch Alder, Fothergilla

Fothergilla is most appreciated for weeks of multicolored display of yellows, oranges, and reds in autumn. In spring and summer its foliage is deep blue green. White, bottlebrush flowers in spring have a honey scent.

'Mount Airy' will reach 6' tall. 'Blue Shadow and 'Blue Mist' have blue summer leaves and reach only 2-3' tall.


Rose of Sharon Aphrodite_Hopkinton Stone & Garden

Valued for large, abundant flowers that are produced in mid to late summer when few other shrubs bloom. Rose of Sharon makes a wonderful garden accent due to its upright habit. Fragrant, bottle brush-like, white flowers blanket this shrub in late spring-early summer. In fall, vibrant orange and red foliage is a show stopper.

This vigorous, quick growing variety makes a crisp, pollution-tolerant hedge. The small, oval, bright green leaves provide dense cover, and clusters of white flowers appear in July and August followed by shiny, round, black fruit.

Thriving in sun or shade, the lustrous, dark green foliage of Privet is not evergreen however but it is an excellent, faster growing, substitute for Boxwood.

Many Varieties of Juniper at Hopkinton Stone & Garden

Juniper

There are a large number of Juniper shrubs. All have attractive green or blue-green needles and blue berries they also all are hardy and tough plants that even deer avoid. There are creeping types that grow no more than a few feet tall, but spread like a carpet. Many small to medium-sized junipers make great landscape shrubs in borders. Large Juniper can be used as visual screens or barriers in the landscape. Tall, columnar varieties look like small trees.


Mountain Laurel Sarah_Hopkinton Stone & Garden

Mountain Laurel are beautiful slow growing evergreen shrubs that come in many blossom colors and sizes. Blooming occurs in late spring, starting with bright buds that gradually enlarge until they burst open revealing a rich interior.

They do well in full sun or light shade and if left unpruned could grow to 5’ tall and wide. Mountain Laurel combines well with sun loving rhododendrons and azaleas.

Andromeda Mountain Fire_Hopkinton Stone & Garden

Noted for its ‘fiery’ red young foliage, the Mountain Fire Japanese Andromeda is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that is excellent as a foundation plant or for groupings in the landscape. Their lovely drooping flowers are a welcome feature. Like all Pieris, Mountain Fire is a slow-growing evergreen that performs best in well-drained soil in partially shady conditions. They can be pruned to maintain a neat form. We also stock other Andromeda varieties.

An excellent evergreen shrub for small hedges and taller varieties make great privacy screens. All Yews have dense, glossy, dark green foliage which are available in low- wide habit or taller columnar forms. All work well as a foundation plants, or placed in pairs at entries or doorways. Deer browsing could be a problem in rural areas.

Heritage River Birch

'Heritage' River Birch, Beutla nigra  

This pyramidal tree features triangular green leaves and ornamental, exfoliating, creamy bark with white and coral patches. It is insect- and disease-resistant.

  • Fall Color: Yellow leaves
  • Site Requirements: Full Sun to Part Shade
  • Mature Height: 40'-50'
Redbud tree in spring at Hopkinton Stone & Garden

Eastern Red Bud, Cercis can. 

In early spring, this plant has a long-lasting profusion of bright purplish-pink blooms borne in clusters before the leaves along smooth gray branches. Its heart-shaped, blood-red leaves are finely veined and glossy when young, slowly turning a dark, purple-tinged green in full sun. The Redbud has a graceful branching structure that stands out in winter.

  • Fall Color: Red to Purple, Orange to Yellow

Higan Double Weeping Cherry

Higan Double Weeping Cherry, Prunus sub.

This ornamental tree has a graceful weeping habit. Leaves stay glossy green throughout the summer and into the fall. The drooping bare branches lend a soothing grace to the landscape in winter. There is nothing quite like the Weeping Higan Cherry in full bloom in the spring! The light pink (almost white), one-inch-diameter flowers cover the branches before the leaves emerge, giving the appearance that fresh snow has fallen on the tree. We also grow exciting new hybrids 'Pink Cascade' & 'Pink Snow Showers'

This dwarf Fox Valley Birch has eye-catching compact growth habit with attractive salmon-orange and cinnamon red patterns from its exfoliating bark. It makes a beautiful winter accent specimen.

Magnolia

Magnolia

The Magnolia is prized for its abundant, long- lasting blooms, fragrance and showy color. Plant them as a hedge along your house or as a single accent at the edge of a patio planting bed. 'Jane' Magnolia (shown) is a great late-spring bloomer that will continue to surprise you with a fragrant tulip shaped blossoms throughout the summer.

A vivid eye-catching flowering tree that bursts into bloom each spring. Fruit color can range from red to orange.  We even carry dwarf and weeping varieties!

This columnar to teardrop-shaped tree is noted for its fine, yet dense texture. The Hornbeam has ornamental winter bark and buds, dense summer foliage, pendulous spring catkins, and unusual autumn fruits.

Eastern Red Cedar

Gray to reddish-brown bark with trunks that are often fluted at the base. Heartwood is light brown and aromatic, and is commonly used for cedar chests.  Foliage may turn russet-green in winter. Berry-like cones are attractive to many birds.
